This is clear evidence that not all of the Algarve coast has sold its soul to the mass tourism devil. Lost somewhere between fine sands, blue sea and sky, right in the heart of the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve, the Forte São João da Barra goes back to the 17th century when it was built to defend the port of Tavira from attack.
That era is now long gone, but even now, its imposing stone walls act as a line of defence to more modern aggressors - high speed living and agitation. It’s completely peaceful here and the austere yet sophisticated decoration with period pieces and numerous contemporary paintings and sculptures, just add to the feeling of tranquillity. Much of its beautiful past also remains, such as the square of arms, well and stone water tank. Nothing also beats taking breakfast watching the birds, sea as the incoming tide turns the river into a huge lake.
Simply great as we said at the start and well worth a stay. To cap it all, the São João da Barra even has a small boat that takes guests up to the deserted beaches and river. Bicycles and numerous treks are also available. How about that for a peaceful Algarve holiday? In conclusion, this is simply one of our favourite places in southern Portugal. The only possible downside is that rooms do not have sea views or terrace, a legacy of its original incarnation as a defensive fort. Yet this, in our opinion, is not a problem as we bet you will be spending as much of your time as possible taking in the charm of the public areas and main terrace of the fort. And with only a few rooms for such a large building, space is something that is definitely not at a premium so you can wander at your own leisure.

What a great and friendly place! We felt like at home and in paradise. Cecilia and her team know how to make people happy. The room was – despite it was in an old building – more comfortable and practical than many other hotelroom we have seen.

Perfekte Location. Ruhig gelegen. Stilvoll.
Frühstück war super. Feigen mit Mandeln, Datteln, frischen o Saft, jegliche Auswahl vorhanden.
Zimmer war wunderschön und vor allem sauber. Wir waren einige Tage alleinige Urlauber,, deshalb war es natürlich nochmal entspannter.
Cecilia ist liebenswert,hilfreich und einfach toll. Jeder Wunsch wird erfüllt.
Die Umgebung ist schön, man kann in wenigen Gehminuten die Promenade und Restaurants erreichen. Der Bootservive hat gut funktioniert.
Für uns waren es 6 Tage pure Erholung.

Just perfect, well received, charming room, good breakfast...Just a bit expensive :)

Bom dia!
Das Fort ist wirklich traumhaft schön gelegen: Frühstück mit Blick auf die Lagune und das Meer oder direkt unter einer riesigen Palme... dann an den gemütlichen, sauberen Pool auf die Liege unterm Olivenbaum oder doch lieber mit dem eigenen Boot mit Fährmann rüber an einen wunderbaren Sandstrand? Die Wahl fällt schwer...
Nach sehr herzlichem Empfang durch die Verwalterin Cecilia konnten wir unsere modernen Zimmer beziehen.Es gibt auch Zimmer, deren EInrichtung eine gelungene Mischung aus antiken Stücken und modernen Gegenständen ist. Auch die Besitzerfamilie, die gerade selbst dort Ferien machte, war sehr freundlich-zugewandt und wir tranken leckeren Wein zusammen :-)
Alles in Allem verbrachten wir 6 sehr gelungene Urlaubstage an einem ganz besonderen Ort, wo sich der Gast auch in der Hochsaison gut zurückziehen und Ruhe finden kann! Wir würden sehr gern wieder dorthin fahren!

Traumhaft entrücktes und vollkommenes Ensemble aus Meer, umgebender Natur, Gartenanlage, bestehender Bausubstanz, moderner Architektur, authentischer Möblierung und insbesondere: liebevollster Gastfreundschaft. Bei der Recherche nach Unterkünften an der Algarve haben wir Gott sei Dank dem Tip gefolgt im Forte einen Stop zu machen, um diese Gegend von einer anderen Seite kennenzulernen. Die Lage und Umgebung sind einmalig und wirklich besonders. Auch das Anwesen ist beeindruckend und strahlt eine enorme Ruhe aus; Abschalten garantiert. Leider muss ich jedoch von der Suite Levante abraten, da diese kein Fenster besitzt und die Eingangstüren quasi einen Schritt neben dem großen Einfahrtstor (durch dieses man übrigens durch eine kleine Luke steigen muss und anfangs etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig ist) sich befinden. Die 2 Wind Suiten in den Innenhof sind jedoch sehr schön.

Positives - Cecilia , who managed the property , was fantastic.
Hotel was very peaceful
Swimming Pool was very clean and tidy
Rooms were clean
Negatives - Access to the hotel was very difficult, fences had been put up by a neighbour who they were in dispute with!
Selection at breakfast was a bit disappointing
Although the room had a very small fridge there were no tea/coffee making facilities
When the wind blew at night , doors and windows rattled - very noisy
Overall , overpriced . Would consider a weekend break but not a 10 day holiday as we did.

Eins vorweg: Besser geht's eigentlich nicht. Lage, Historie, Transfer derer ins Heute, alles atemberaubend schön.
Dazu Cecilia, Chefin und gefühlte Mutter des Forte. Ganz, ganz großer Daumen nach oben. Keine Wünsche offen.
Aber leider.... ist da die Großfamilie des Besitzers. Die offenbar alljährlich zur Sommerszeit einfällt, um sich herrschaftlich peinlich daneben zu benehmen. Locker 6-8 sehr selbstbewusste, raumgreifende Erwachsene und entsprechend viele Kinder mit Fahrrad, Leuchtschwert und Co. Nachts um halb 1. Mir taten die Honeymooner Leid.
