Gastronomy in Mallorca

Mallorcan cuisine is totally Mediterranean. The basic ingredients are usually vegetables such as peppers, tomatoes, zucchinis, eggplants and garlic, and lots of fish. Dishes are mainly prepared with olive oil, which is also produced on the island itself. The foods have an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients and simple but delicious recipes.

One of the most iconic dishes in Mallorca is the pa amb oli, a simple but flavourful dish that consists of bread, olive oil, tomatoes, and cured ham or cheese. This dish is a staple of the island's cuisine and can be found in almost every restaurant and cafe.

Seafood is another important part of the Mallorcan diet, with dishes such as arros brut (a rice dish with seafood and meat), caldereta de llagosta (lobster stew), and suquet de peix (fish stew) being particularly popular. The island's fishermen use traditional fishing methods, ensuring that the seafood is of the highest quality and freshness.

Mallorca is also known for its cured meats, such as sobrassada (a soft, spreadable sausage made with pork and paprika) and botifarró (a traditional sausage made with pork and spices). These meats are often served as part of a platter of cold cuts, along with cheeses and olives.

The island's agriculture also plays an important role in its gastronomy, with fresh fruits and vegetables being used in many dishes. One of the most popular dishes is tumbet, a vegetable dish made with potatoes, eggplant, red peppers, and tomatoes.

Finally, Mallorca is also known for its desserts and pastries, with ensaimadas (a sweet, spiral-shaped pastry dusted with powdered sugar) being the most famous. Other popular desserts include coca de patata (a sweet potato cake) and gató de almendra (an almond cake).

The island also produces regional wine.

Overall, Mallorcan gastronomy is a delicious and diverse culinary tradition that is well worth exploring. Whether you're sampling fresh seafood, cured meats, or traditional pastries, the island's cuisine is sure to delight your taste buds and leave you with a lasting impression of Mallorca's rich culinary heritage.

The most beautiful coves (calas) and beaches in Mallorca

On the island there are countless coves, known as calas, and beaches created by the passage of time, some are too crowded in summer and others are not even worth mentioning.

Therefore, here is a list of the beaches and coves you should definitely go to since they are the most beautiful ones and much less crowded:

Sant Joan Beach
This small and cute beach is crescent-shaped, with about 120 meters of sand and just 20 meters wide, it fills up easily, so it is best to go during the week. It is ideal to go with children, since the water does not cover up to 50 meters. It has lifeguard services, sunbeds, umbrellas and beach bar.

Beach of Alcudia
With a sandy beach of about 5 kilometres long and with all the necessary services, with showers, bathrooms, beach bars, hammocks and parasols, water sports, and boat trips...

Banyalbufar Beach
The water is crystal clear, ranging from turquoise to dark blue, due to its stones and rocks at the bottom. After a day at the beach, it is also worthwhile to stroll through the village, a quiet and picturesque place.

Beach of Muro
Of fine white sand, it is the continuation of the beach of Alcúdia and is 5320 meters of sandy coast, with a stretch of almost two kilometres of virgin beach, something unusual in Mallorca. This last area is perfect for those looking for tranquillity and perfect for couples. Please note: no beach bars or services

Sa Canova
Beach, with 1700 meters totally virgin, was declared a natural area of special interest, and is above all one of the most secret corners of the island. The beach is only 200 meters long, of gravel and pebbles, with a sandy bottom and rocky area. Its clean and crystalline waters, has a clear bottom with shades ranging from blue, turquoise, green...

Es Trenc Beach
Beach of 3 kilometres of white sand, also boasts crystal clear and shallow waters, with some areas to do nudism. It is in the beautiful natural park "Salobrar de Campos" and therefore not a single building can be seen. It is true that the beach is very crowded in summer, but it never fills up because of the limited parking spaces. For this reason it is necessary to get up early to avoid queuing in summer and to be able to enter quickly.

Formentor Beach
It is considered, and rightly so, one of the best and most beautiful beaches in Mallorca. Formentor has something special, with its landscape hardly altered, its beach of fine sand, its clear waters, and the pines at the edge of the beach with its shade. This beach is also very crowded in high season, in July, August and September. It is a unique place to enjoy the views, especially the sunsets.

Cala Torta
150 meters of golden sand wedged between rocks, thyme mountains and with an arid and wild aspect. It is also worth visiting Cala Mitjana, smaller in size, and Cala Estreta which is just an opening in the rock ideal for snorkelling.

Llucalcari
These coves can only be reached on foot. For those who love hiking, we recommend leaving the car at Cala Deià (equally spectacular, but more crowded) and walking through the cliffs for about 15 to 20 minutes. Nudism, camping and diving are common practices in the surroundings.

Sa Calobra
Wild cove of crystalline waters embedded in a rocky cliff, which is reached by a 12 kilometre road with wonderful views.

Cala Figuera
One of the most inaccessible and beautiful beaches in Mallorca.

Others: Cala Pi, about 25 kilometres from Palma de Mallorca, Cala Antena and Cala Gran (about 10 and 15 kilometres from Portocolom, respectively); Cala Barques (7 kilometres from Pollença); Sa Font de Sa Cala (2 kilometres from Cala Ratjada); Cala Tuent (40 kilometres from Sóller) Cala del Moro, Ses Covetes, Cala Varques, Sa Platget and Cala de Portals Vells, Es Caragol close to the Cap de Ses Salines
