Activities in Styria

The rich and diverse region of Austrian Styria is characterised by picturesque alpine landscapes, rivers, lakes and forests as well as vineyards and orchards and is therefore very popular with nature and outdoor lovers. Hikes on the numerous trails that lead through impressive nature parks such as the Gesäuse National Park or the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park are particularly popular.

In winter, the ski areas of Styria offer numerous opportunities for skiing and snowboarding, among them the Dachstein-Tauern ski area or Schladming. But cyclists and mountain bikers will also find numerous routes for all levels of difficulty, including the Murradweg, which runs along the river Mur. For the adventurous, there are also opportunities for climbing, rafting and canyoning. Rafting on the Salza, a river in the region, is popular.

There are many interesting places to visit in Styria, including the city of Graz, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Graz is a charming city with many historic buildings.

One of the most popular activities in Styria is experiencing the culinary arts and wine, for example on the South Styrian Wine Route. Some call it pleasure hiking and pleasure cycling - in addition to enjoying nature and exercise, stopping off at so-called Buschenschänken (wine taverns) or restaurants and wineries is just as much a part of the experience. Wine and fruit tastings at the many wineries and fruit farmers are a special highlight.

Gastronomy in Styria

Tradition is deeply rooted in Austrian Styria. In the Buschenschänken (wine taverns) and restaurants, the hosts often wear typical Styrian costumes: the Styrian suit for the men and the Styrian dirndl for the ladies, often in fir-green with poppy-red.

Countless wineries and wine taverns offer Styrian wines, which are internationally renowned due to their special characteristics and the climatic conditions of the region. Mainly white wines are cultivated, such as Schilcher, Morillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Gelber Muskateller. Matching Styrian root meat, a hearty stew of potatoes, root vegetables and various meats such as pork, beef or veal. Styrian horseradish, a spicy horseradish sauce, is served with many dishes, such as root meat or fried chicken. For dessert, a Styrian apple strudel and the pleasure feast is perfect.
